There’s a question we’ve all asked at some point—whether out loud or quietly in our own hearts:
“What did I do to deserve this?”
In John 9, when the disciples saw a man who had been blind since birth, they asked Jesus that very thing: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
They were looking for a cause.
A reason.
Someone to blame.
But Jesus answered in a way that completely reframed the conversation:
“It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” (John 9:3)
In other words—this wasn’t about punishment. It was about purpose.
So often, we interpret pain as proof that something went wrong.
That we messed up.
That God is distant.
That we’re being corrected or overlooked.
But what if the question isn’t: “Why did this happen to me?”
What if the better question is: “What will God do through this?”
The blind man’s story didn’t begin with healing.
It began with years of limitation, confusion, and probably questions he couldn’t answer.
But his pain wasn’t wasted.
It became the very place where God’s power was revealed.
And the same can be true for you.
The thing you’ve been carrying…
The situation you don’t understand…
The season that feels unfair…
It may not be evidence of God’s absence.
It may be the very place where His presence is about to be made known.
This doesn’t mean the pain is easy. Or that it makes immediate sense.
But it does mean this:
Your pain is not pointless.
Your struggle is not invisible.
And your story is not finished.
God is not just aware of what you’re going through—He is intentional about what He can bring out of it.
So instead of asking, “What did I do to deserve this?” Try asking: “God, what do You want to do through this?”
You might be surprised at what He reveals.
