Sometimes we go by interesting things…
My sisters and I had wild imaginations as children (some would argue it remains the same today…). In-between fireplace performances and poolside matinees, we had this thing where we would tell people our names were whatever was on our shirts that day.
Enter: Watermelon and Star.
There are people I see at the grocery store or a soccer game that still to this day know the Price girls as once having gone by “Watermelon” and “Star.” I smile at the memory and happily inform them that we no longer go by those names.
I find it interesting, however…
That as adults, we as people still possess this desire to belong, to identify, and to be accepted. Many of us try on tons of identities, trends changing like the tide and therefore so do we. Except we go more extreme than just going by what’s on our shirt.
We change the way we speak, look, post, and even believe - all to belong. All to BE someone. Someone who is loved, accepted, wanted, even needed.
What if I told you that you were already all of those things, EXACTLY as you are?
We go to all the wrong places looking for what can only be found in Jesus.
It is exhausting having to constantly change who we are to achieve the love we want. It is confusing, wondering why what was once “in” is now very, very out - and so are we.
But the bible tells us this,
“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.
This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
Before you were even born, you were chosen, adopted, and loved by the Creator of the Universe. The one who made the stars also made you - and called you enough.
You were so loved that God sent His only Son to bear the weight of your sin on a cross, to die in your place so that you could live a life in freedom.
My guest this week on The True North Podcast has her own journey with identity - searching for it in all the wrong places, and even getting deeply involved in New Age practices before encountering Jesus in a way that transformed everything. Today she runs a Christ-centered business birthed out of obedience, humility, and a desire to steward God’s Word well.
Dayna’ story is raw, redemptive, and full of hope. It represents the story we can all have when we choose to leave behind the molds we tried so desperately to fit and accept the only one that matters - a son or daughter of Christ.
You don’t have to keep searching for identity.
It is yours through Jesus. It doesn’t mean the road will be easy, but it does mean that we can begin to heal the fractured version of us that wanted to belong, and begin to be whole again.
This week on The True North Podcast…
Listen to or watch my conversation with Dayna about identity, idolatry, and knowing the voice of God. Titled “Is It God, or Is It Me? How to Recognize God’s Voice Above Your Own” her story will bring you that “Me too…” and warm hug you’ve been missing.
