Are you ever just, tired of being tired?

We spend so much of our time “living the dream” and “doing the most” feeling completely and utterly depleted.

Be it work, social, ministry, parenthood, whatever yours is - the thing you feel called to do - we do it so empty sometimes.

I think there is a misconception among us all that because God called us to it, it must mean it’s all going to be easy; it’s all gonna be rainbows and positivity and we will wake up everyday excited to do it.

Wrong.

“Why?” You may ask. Why are we so tired, burned out, and empty? Because we are all one thing…

Thirsty.

In John 4, Jesus meets a samaritan woman. She is coming to draw water in the heat of the day to avoid other people. She is outcast by society, ridiculed and shamed for decisions she has made, and so she comes alone, when she can hide from the world.

Jesus asks her for a drink, to which she is shocked. A Jewish man historically would never have associated with a Samaritan woman, much less asked her for a drink.

Scripture says that:

“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” -John 4:13-14

"The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” -John 4:15

Give me this water.

The thing we have been missing, the thing we so desperately need, is not a nap or a spa day, is not a pat on the back or a moment of recognition, it’s more of Jesus.

There is a reason relaxation only brings temporary relief - because there is a difference in relaxation and rest. One is manufactured by us, the other is freely given by One who is greater than us.

Maybe it’s shame, perfectionism, pressure to succeed, impending deadlines or screaming kiddos - whatever it is for you that’s been making you say, “God just get me through this…” I have a message for you:

You weren’t made to just get through life, but to go through it with joy, grace, and purpose. You were made to do more than just survive - you were made to thrive.

We have been begging for spiritual energy boosts - espresso shots to the soul to get us through when Jesus offers a well of living water that will never run dry, that will never leave us thirsty again.

It’s time to change our prayer. No more “God, get me through” but “Lord, give me this water.” This water that satisfies the thirst that no amount of sleep, validation, money or time could ever satisfy.

It starts with your bible. It starts with opening it up and reconnecting with the one you do it all for.

That’s how we break up with burnout, we fall back in love with Jesus.
